Zappos.com Data Breach
02-03-2012

Mid January of this year, over 24 million Zappos.com customers' online data profiles were accessed by a hacker.  This data breach resulted in Zappos' customer account numbers, names, e-mail addresses, shipping addresses, phone numbers, and credit card numbers (last 4 digits) all being compromised.  If you were one of these Zappos.com customers, you may have received an e-mail stating that this happened and an investigation is being pursued.  That e-mail also included a great tip regarding online passwords.  It stated, "We also recommend that you change your password on any other web site where you use the same or a similar password."

Granted, if you are a Zappos.com customer, we recommend you go change your Online Banking password immediately.  You can do this by clicking on 'Security' on the left-hand menu within Online Banking.  However, even if you are not a Zappos.com customer, we recommend ensuring that your Online Banking password is unique to MEFCU and to you as an individual!  Names and birthdays (even of your children), as well as generic passwords such as "abc123", are not considered strong personal passwords.  Create one that is as unique as your fingerprint.

Our multifactor, out-of-band, security system is there to keep your financial data safe.  However, we still ask that you change it every six months, and it even can block someone who guesses your password!  Remember, online security is your responsibility too.  Take the small steps necessary to keep your data safe and review your password today!
